Residential Treatment Center for Sexually Abusive Youth

Poplar Springs Residential Treatment Center

Our program is dedicated to empowering young men ages 11–17 to address sexually abusive behaviors. We provide intensive treatment with a short length of stay, generally 9-11 months. We collaborate with community agencies and families toward successful reintegration into the community.

Clinical expertise: Bringing expertise in sexualized behaviors to adolescents and their families throughout the region

Upon admission, we conduct a thorough, individualized assessment under a psychiatrist’s direction.

Staff and residents work together with a four phase system of treatment to include the following areas of interest:

  • Disclosure
  • Family issues, past and present
  • Identifying defense mechanisms and cognitive distortions
  • Identifying cycle of abuse
  • Victim empathy
  • Relapse prevention

The Therapeutic Community

We provide a therapeutic community where residents receive individual therapy three times a week as well as family and group therapies. Within the therapeutic community, there are activities that help residents grow in areas that are necessary to lead a healthy life. Activities include groups focusing on team building, social skills, self-esteem and anger management. We offer a variety of treatment interventions such as music therapy, art therapy, leisure education, recreation therapy and therapeutic community outings. Residents enjoy the outdoor amenities of a nature trail, in ground pool, low ropes course and basketball and volleyball courts.

Discharge Readiness

Clinicians work in collaboration with families and other systems of care to ensure the most appropriate placement upon discharge. Our discharge planning begins at the time of admission in preparing our residents to meet their goals and objectives prior to their transition. The average length of stay is 9–11 months. All residents attend the Learning Center, our private 12-month school certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
