Poplar Springs Academy

As part of Poplar Springs Hospital’s continuum of care, Poplar Springs Academy offers a unique, structured learning environment. Poplar Springs Academy is a private day school licensed by the Virginia Department of Education specializing in students with severe emotional, academic, developmental and social challenges.
Bringing clinical expertise to the classroom environment
Poplar Springs Academy staff includes licensed special education teachers, a director of the academy and a director of education, as well as other professionals as needed by the students. The teachers are experts in developing relationships with the students, families and community professionals to ensure success and transition to a less restrictive environment.
At Poplar Springs Academy, students learn to value education, develop a positive attitude toward adults and authority figures, recognize self-worth, respect others’ rights and acquire appropriate conflict resolution skills. Poplar Springs Academy helps students gain insight into their previous poor academic and behavioral performances. Poplar Springs Academy will work with each student to develop a transitional plan that utilizes their newly developed academic and behavioral skills. The skills learned will maximize the students’ potential to return and maintain positive behaviors in the public school setting.
